Research Opportunities

Scholarly activity is considered an integral part of the educational process for a general surgeon. By pursuing an area of knowledge in depth, the resident learns to read the scientific literature critically and collate information in a fashion that will serve him/her throughout his/her career. Residents in the Department of Surgery have presented papers and posters at numerous regional and national meetings.

Surgical residents have received awards for presentations at the Delaware Vascular Society, the Keystone Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the Pennsylvania Committee on Trauma, American College of Surgeons Surgical Forum, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma as well as other numerous national subspecialty meetings. The residents in surgery have also received numerous institutional monetary awards for their accomplishments in clinical research. A surgery resident has received the institution’s Bosanac Award of $1000 six times in the last eight years. This resident paper competition is open to all residents at Lehigh Valley Hospital.

The hospital’s research department consists of two doctoral-level statisticians, two research consultants, and clerical staff to help physicians and residents with research design, methods, data analysis and publication. Within the Department of Surgery we have a surgical editor, whose full-time responsibility is assisting with research conducted by surgical residents and faculty. The Multimedia Department has artists, photographers, and technical support staff to assist with PowerPoint and poster development for presentations.

Trauma Research meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The status of current resident research projects is reviewed and new projects may be identified.

Research funding is obtained from private foundations and commercial supporters. Cooperative agreements with Lehigh University and other area colleges allow for bench research.

Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust

The Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust was founded in 1976 by the estate of Leonard Parker Pool and named for his wife. The Trust serves as a resource that enables Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network to be a superior regional hospital and improve the health of the citizens of the Lehigh Valley in Eastern Pennsylvania.

The Trust’s total assets are in excess of $100,000,000. The Trust’s grants, exceeding $12,000,000 in 1998, are intended to measurably improve the health of the citizens of the region. The Trust welcomes all proposals supportive of its mission.
